Wood Decking Replacement

When the wood under your shingles rots, we tear it out and rebuild a solid base.

Wood decking sits under your shingles and takes the real hit from weather and time. We remove the old boards, check the rafters underneath for rot, and install new pressure-treated plywood or cedar depending on what makes sense for your roof. It's the foundation work most roofers skip, but we don't.

Santa Ana's marine layer and heat cycles break down decking faster than people expect. We usually find the problem when we're up there for another repair, or when a homeowner notices soft spots or sagging. We replace only what's damaged, not the whole roof, which saves money and gets the structural integrity back.

You get a roof that won't fail in five years because the decking underneath gave out. The new boards are fastened to solid rafters, and your shingles go down on something that will actually hold them. No shortcuts, no surprises when the inspector comes by.

What's included: Removal of damaged or rotted decking boards; Inspection of rafters and framing for additional damage; Installation of new pressure-treated plywood or cedar decking; Proper fastening and spacing per code; Preparation for shingle installation or re-shingling.

Questions

Wood Decking Replacement — FAQ

How do I know if my decking needs replacement?

Soft spots when you walk on the roof, visible sagging, or shingles that dip in certain areas are the main signs. If you're having shingles replaced, we always inspect the decking while we're up there.

Can you just patch the bad spots?

We patch small areas if the rest of the decking is solid. But if rot has spread or multiple boards are compromised, replacement is the right move. Patching a failing deck is just delaying the real problem.

How long does the work take?

Usually one to two days depending on how much decking needs to come out and whether we're shingling after. We'll give you a clear timeline before we start.
